Modernizing IB Learning: Kognity’s Impact at Westbury High School

For Westbury High School on Long Island, New York, 2025 marks a significant milestone: their first year implementing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. To support this ambitious new journey, Westbury High School embraced Kognity, which quickly proved to be an indispensable tool for their IB journey.

Koriene Petrelli, IB DP Coordinator and Health Education Teacher, along with Brendan Gallivan, Assistant Superintendent for Curricular Instruction, share how Kognity is transforming teaching and learning and helping to define a new educational culture.

Empowering teachers: efficiency & up-to-date resources

Kognity significantly streamlines the teaching process, allowing educators to disseminate information more efficiently and ensuring access to the latest educational tools.

Kognity has definitely helped reduce the time that the teachers are disseminating the information to the scholars because they’re able to do a lot of self learning online.

Teachers can utilize and even modify Kognity’s built-in worksheets, further accelerating the learning process.

Engaging every scholar in the 21st century

From the outset, students at Westbury High School have embraced Kognity’s dynamic platform. Its interactive features keep learning engaging and relevant, extending beyond traditional text.

Having this platform… gives us the updated media, it gives us the updated tools to be able to keep our scholars in the 21st century and really on top of their feet.

– Koriene Petrelli

Beyond individual study, students are utilizing Kognity for strength tests and even friendly competition, ensuring they remain captivated by their learning process. The platform’s ability to consistently update content also ensures students are always interacting with current, global information.

Ensuring accessibility for every learner

Brendan Gallivan emphasizes Kognity’s transformative impact on making complex IB content accessible to all students, regardless of their learning style or needs.

An interactive platform that provides three dimensional models that engage students visually… Text that could be broken down and delivered in ways accessible to scholars who might be neurodivergent, or language learners.

– Brendan Gallivan

This commitment to inclusivity, featuring visually engaging 3D models and adaptable text, makes Kognity an invaluable resource for Westbury’s diverse student body, ensuring every scholar can access and understand critical concepts.

Supporting a New Educational Culture

For Westbury High School, transitioning to two-year IB courses represents a significant cultural shift. Kognity serves as a vital partner in this evolution, providing the stable, adaptable resource needed for such a transformation.

Part of our evolution here in this very short time… we’re engaged in two-year courses for the first time, which is a real culture shift for our school and for our scholars. So a resource that helps us on that journey is part of what we need.

– Brendan Gallivan

Kognity not only supports the academic rigor of the IB Diploma Programme but also helps foster a more dynamic, modern, and inclusive learning environment, paving the way for Westbury High School’s continued success in the IB journey.
