Taking the Sting Out of NGSS Adoption

Imagine a classroom where students are actively solving problems, not just memorizing facts. That’s the promise of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). But let’s be honest, revamping your entire science curriculum can feel overwhelming. NSTA surveys, professional development requests, and teacher feedback all confirm this is a common concern.

NGSS can be complex to implement for a few reasons:

  • Shift in Focus: NGSS moves away from rote memorization and emphasizes a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.   • Finding the Right Resources: Many existing curriculums don’t fully align with NGSS. Finding high-quality materials that effectively integrate DCIs, SEPs, and CCCs can be a time-consuming struggle for educators.
  • Teacher Training and Support: Successfully implementing NGSS requires teachers to have a strong grasp of the new standards and how to translate them into engaging lessons. Unfortunately, many schools lack the resources to provide adequate professional development for NGSS.
