We know that great things happen when students take ownership of their learning experiences. But encouraging students to do so means being intentional about promoting student agency using a combination of different strategies.

John Patton is a pedagogical leader, Biology teacher and an expert in evidence-based teaching and learning. Among other things, his research explores effective pedagogy for the development of student passions, which has enabled him to discover simple differentiation strategies to promote student agency in the classroom.

This includes practical tools such as differentiation grids and gallery assessments, but also tips on how you as an educator can construct and present class activities in a way that challenges students to be more active and take more control over their learning.
